Scaling WordPress with Amazon Web Services

David Adkins will give a basic overview of Amazon Web Services for those not familiar with it and then talk about how the Herald-Tribune was able to build a scalable server architecture with AWS and WordPress that can handle millions of page views daily at an extremely low cost.

David Adkins is Director of Systems and Digital Technology at the Herald-Tribune Media Group. He leads a team responsible for information technology and digital development at the Herald-Tribune.

David joined the Herald-Tribune in May 2008 and his team has developed several award-winning digital products. The Ticket Sarasota website won a national 2011 EPPY award for Best Entertainment Blog. The Herald-Tribune’s photo gallery tool won an FSNE Award for Digital Innovation to Drive Audience in 2011. In 2012, the Herald-Tribune won an EPPY award for Best Investigative/Enterprise Feature for its Unfit for Duty project.

David started his career in digital technology in 2001 at WorldPay Inc., a Virginia internet payment processing company where he held various positions in IT and Product Development. In 2005, he moved to Sarasota, to become senior developer at Real Tech Services Inc. In 2006, he joined Sarasota Magazine as a Web Manager, responsible for nine magazine websites across the state. While at Sarasota Magazine his websites won several industry awards, including a Charlie Award from the Florida Magazine Association for Best Overall Website.
